Mystery TV, known in some versions as Suspense or Crime Time, is the 2nd level/channel of Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Gex dresses up in Sherlock Holmes' trench coat here, but a special machine can be found here that turns him into a vampire, giving him the ability to glide with the cloak.

Setting and inspiration[]

The level takes place in a large British Mansion based almost entirely on detective films from the golden era of Hollywood, mostly drawing inspiration from the British contributions to the whodunit sub-genre. In other words, it mainly references old classics like Sherlock Holmes, but also references more modern mystery dramas, such as CSI and Law and Order. However, some non-mystery references are present. Firstly, the level's name is based on Sleepless in Seattle, a film in the unrelated genre of romantic comedy. Also, in keeping with the previous games' Cemetery and Scream TV levels, it has traits of the horror genre as well, such as the Bad Bears, as well as a return by the blood coolers from the latter.

Here several portraits were shown here, for example: Rez caressing a dog, Mooshoo Pork meditating, Brain of Oz as a military general, a version of The Birth of Venus featuring a Headless Cowboy and Gex as a soldier.

Missions and strategy[]

Survive the Hedge Maze
[]

At the very end of the level is a hedge maze filled with Bad Bears and Safari Sams. The player can reach this part of the mansion from the pool area that connects the hedge maze to the study. Navigate through the area until you reach a bright, green area guarded by a Bad Bear. This is where the remote is, so take out the bear and grab the remote.

Break the Three Blood Coolers, Again!
[]

Located in the mansion's foyer are three blood coolers, each of which are above the door leading to the mission's remote. While finding the coolers is easy, getting to them will be the hard part, as the player will need to turn Gex into DracuGex in order to reach most, if not all, of the coolers. However, the only way to become DracuGex is by finding the secret wine cellar. To open the door to the cellar, Gex must once again navigate the hedge maze. The location of the Dracula bust the player needs to whack is close to the Survive the Hedge Maze remote hidden behind a wall. Tail whip the bust to open a door in the study. This is what leads to the wine cellar. After collecting the Paw Coin and flipping the switch at the end of the room, Gex will turn into DracuGex. In this form, Gex can glide to the blood coolers in the foyer. Whack the coolers and the door to the remote will open.

Find and Beat the Three Mini-Games
[]

Throughout the mansion, there are three key locations where Gex can use his magnifying glass to look at specific objects and points of interest. Images of the three objects can be seen on the crest in the mansion's foyer, cluing the player in on what objects need to be observed. Each object and point of interest has a magnifying glass near or on it to indicate that it can be observed with the magnifying glass, and when the magnifying glass is used, the player will have to win a mini-game. Winning any of these mini-games nets the player a Bonus Coin, and beating all three will activate the TV on the study's upper floor. Whack the Dracula bust in the bedroom to reveal stairs to jump on to reach the upper floor, though this will also cause the Bad Bears in the foyer to come to life.

The first object is a mounted bear head in the study. Observing this object shrinks Gex down and has him destroying ten Fleas. The second object is a sink. The mini-game here involves popping five bubbles before time expires. Anglerfish enemies appear to hinder the player. The third and final mini-game is in the game room, where Gex must destroy seven pool balls. Once all three mini-games are beaten, head to the upper floor of the study where a remote is waiting.

Trivia[]

  • In a video showcasing game play of an earlier version of Gex 3, the bears can be seen moving while still on their stands.
    • Said stands depict their names as "Huggy Bear".
  • The level was called "Clue TV" before having its name changed for the final release.
  • An oven enemy was meant to appear in the kitchen. However, it was replaced by a Safari Sam in demos and by a Bad Bear in the final release.
  • The magnifying glass that would indicate the presence of a mini-game was originally a 3d object. At first, the player had to tail whip the magnifying glass to start the mini-games. However, the magnifying glass was made into a texture in the finished product.
  • The crest found in the mansion's foyer depicts many relevant things found in the level, from clues to where the mini-games are found to stakes and blood stains that allude to DracuGex. However, it also depicts the early design of the Golden Flies before the design was changed.
  • The portraits in the level depict four bosses that Gex had encountered throughout the franchise, two of whom are bosses within Gex 3 itself, these being Rez and Brain of Oz. The other Mooshoo Pork does not appear as bosses in this game. However, there was a cut boss level in the N64 version under the codename Jaws1 that would have included a fight with Mooshoo Pork.
