Mission Control is the main hub of Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. It is Gex's headquarters in the game and as such takes inspiration from traditional spy headquarters in espionage movies. From here, Gex can enter the training area or access the sub-hubs that make up the Media Dimension, which in turn lead to the different levels of the game. He can also have access to the Holiday Broadcasting and Mystery TV levels from here.

Layout[]

The hub is split into two sections: a first floor and a second floor.

The first floor has the entrances to Lake Flaccid, the training area and the Gex Vault. A screen featuring Agent Xtra is on display in the center of the room and is what Gex uses to talk to Agent Xtra in the N64 version’s intro. There is a teleporter over to the side that Gex uses to enter Mission Control at the start of the game and can be used to exit the training area. The training area is divided into several sections, each one dedicated to teaching old and new players about core moves that Gex will be using throughout the game. The only way players can advance is if they perform the tasks Alfred assigns to Gex and the area can only truly be entered once Gex opens up the large gecko mouth blocking the area by stepping on a gecko paw pad. First is a room featuring training dummies modeled after Rez that Gex must tail whip to advance. The second area is devoted to Gex jumping from one pillar to another, each one moving further up than the other until Gex can reach the room’s exit. The third room is similar to the second, only it requires Gex’s tail bounce to reach the exit. The final room features paw platforms that Gex must use his karate kick to reach. Doing so rewards the player with a remote and a teleporter that returns them to the main area.

The second floor has the entrances to Holiday Broadcasting, Dial "A" for Arson (Peg Leg Polka in the N64 version), Mystery TV, Funky Town and Slappy Valley. To reach the second floor, players must tail bounce up a large set of stairs. In the Mystery TV level entrance, players can find a portrait of DracuGex that Gex can use to find collectibles he couldn’t get in his karate gi.

On both floors are computers, one on the first floor and two on the second. Hitting all three opens the way to Dial “A” for Arsonist, which is located behind a false wall with a portrait on it.

  • Mission Control sports a largely different look in the December 30, 1998 prototype.
    • Most of the areas for the levels do not exist nor does the training area.
    • The area for Holiday Broadcasting exists, however, it is not located in Mission Control itself. At the start of the prototype if Gex walks towards the wall in the beginning of Lake Flaccid, he will find himself in a test room containing Holiday Broadcasting and Mystery TV as well as a pathway past them. Going through this pathway will take him to an early version of The Pole.
  • In the Feburary 8, 1999 prototype, Mission Control is shown to have a few differences compared to the retail version
    • Gex chracter model seems to be slightly larger compared to the rest of the hub area
    • Lake Flaccid has an extended level entrance similarly to Slappy Valley and Funky Town hubs. But, it's been omitted from the retail version, the reasons for this change is unknown
    • The training rooms for the tutorial appears in a slightly different order
    • There's no teleporter present at the end of the training room or within the main hub.
    • The red remotes from the second game are used as main collectable. Possibly as a placeholder as the Gex 3 remote isn't present in this build.
    • Each level has three remotes to collect instead of four remotes.
    • Mystery TV is called Clue TV.
    • Bonus Bonazas rewards a red remote instead of a code.
    • The hub doors for Lake Flaccid and Funky Town are green. Instead of red and blue respectively for the retail version. This implies that Boss Keys weren't not finalised yet.
    • The vending machines are red instead of purple.
    • The glass panes containing the Paw Coin, Power-UP TV and Bonus Coin are absent from this build.
    • The Mission Control hub plays the music track which is present in the Superhero Show level.
