Fairytales TV is the 8th level/channel of Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Serving as the kids' network of the game, it aims the premise at pre-school kids due to its use of nursery rhymes and fairytales (hence the name). Gex dresses up in Red Riding Hood's cloak, giving him the ability to glide. The bees from Gex 2 return in this level. The majority of the level takes place climbing the beanstalk.

Setting and inspiration[]

The level is inspired by numerous fairytales, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and the Three Little Pigs.

Missions and strategy[]

Climb the Beanstalk (Jack and the Beanstalk)
[]

This level is much more vertical than any other stage before it. Unlike Western Station, where the player is simply walking and/or riding up a spiraling path, this level involves climbing and jumping up a large beanstalk to a chamber that can only be implied as the giant's lair. Should the player have trouble climbing the beanstalk, there are checkpoints throughout the beanstalk that can summon a magic mirror than will teleport Gex up to the level where the checkpoint was activated. As for completing the level itself, all the player needs to do is climb to the top of the beanstalk and find the remote.

Destroy the Three Little Pigs' Houses (Three Little Pigs)
[]

Behind the beanstalk is a bridge that leads to a straw house guarded by a Big Bad Wolf. Take out the wolf and destroy the straw house. This is the first of three houses that the player must demolish to complete the mission. After a house is destroyed, a pig will appear and attack Gex. Destroying the pig isn't necessary for completing the mission, but is an option. As the player climbs up the beanstalk, floating islands will become visible. Glide to them to find the wooden house and, when the player travels further up, the brick house and destroy them. This will activate the TV near the brick house. Head to the Tv and collect the remote.

Jump Over the Three Candlesticks (Jack Be Nimble)
[]

This mission involves jumping over candlesticks that the player will see on their way up the beanstalk. Climb up the beanstalk and jump over the candles as they come until the TV at the bottom of the beanstalk turns on. Jump down the beanstalk and the remote is your prize.

Trivia[]

  • Gex was originally meant to dress up as Jack from the "Jack and the Bean Stalk" fairy tale, as seen in the December 30, 1998 prototype. It is hypothesized that the reason why the costume was cut was because the level would have been too difficult to traverse without a gliding mechanic, hence why it was replaced by the Little Red Riding Hood costume. Their was also a N64-exclusive version of this level that was based on a fairytale village called Fvilla1. This was the original level that would have featured the Little Red Riding Hood costume before it was used in the Jack in the Beanstalk version of the level. In the end, the final product was a sort of hybrid of both versions, with the Playstation-exclusive stage combined with the N64-exclusive costume for Gex to wear.
  • This is the only regular level that has two different titles for the same stage. Given that there was supposed to be a different version of the stage depending on the console the player was using, it would seem that the name "Red Riding in the Hood" was a remnant of the scrapped Fvilla1 that, funnily enough, made it into the Playstation version while the N64 version had the level name "Bean Stalker" instead.
  • From the December 30th, 1998 prototype. On its mission select menu; the placeholder name was called 'Fairy Theater'
